The Design Challenge

To create beautiful, themed, public garden spaces, replacing weedy, overgrown and scrubby areas surrounding the Saugatuck Douglas History Center.

The Design Goals

Design and plant garden bed stations to delight the eye and to enhance the historical and educational signage along the gardens’ pathways. Also to emphasize sustainable, environmentally friendly gardening practices throughout, as demonstrated by the plant materials used and the maintenance protocols practiced.

Project Result

With our virtually chemical-free maintenance program and extensive plantings of native plant species and cultivars, the site has successfully become a haven for birds, butterflies, native bees and other vital pollinators. The gardens have proved very popular with the public, attracting hundreds of visitors yearly and provide a lovely venue for events and programs hosted by the Saugatuck Douglas History Center. This beautiful space may also be reserved for private use for weddings and other social gatherings.
